MATCH REPORT

PRELIMINARY FINAL 1 September at Webb Oval
GLENUNGA 14.16 d EDWARDSTOWN 10.15

The Rams moved into the Grand final with an emphatic win over Edwardstown, set up by a dominating first quarter, where the Rams kicked 8 goals to their opponents solitary goal.

The late withdrawal of Josh Henke saw Nick Wundke come into the side, not having played since round 1 when he injured his foot. Still not fully recovered, he gave a presence at full forward and set the tone with a strong mark and accurate kick for the Rams first goal and his first of three. From then on the Rams were up and about and with Tom Beard matching the Towns Michael Sara in ruck, the Rams were for the first time more than breaking even in the clearances.

Michael McMahon was proving difficult to contain and the Towns had no answer to the Rams quick ball movement

In the second quarter, going to the School end, the Rams still maintained their momentum and widened their lead with three goals to the Town’s one goal and went into the half time break with a lead of 53 points.

The third quarter should have seen the Rams run right away with the game, but some poor kicking (2.9 to 2.2) saw the Rams only increase it lead to 60 points. Nevertheless, Edwardstown would need a miracle to overcome such a deficit.

The last quarter saw the Towns score freely, a lot of the time from errors by the Rams as the Rams began to tire, but it was all too late.

For the Rams, Alex Haren continued his good form on the ball, while Tom Beard was instrumental in giving the Rams first use. Michael McMahon oozed class all day and but for some wayward kicking in the second half could have finished with at least 8 goals. Justin Bonney hardly made a mistake at halfback and junior Tom Butterworth attacked the ball hard all day to give the Rams an advantage on the wing.

The win will give some confidence as they face Gepps cross again in the Grand Final
